The dark haired girl let out a long breath, watching as her breath formed a cloud in front of her. The street she was on was deserted except for the occasional person on an errand, rushing down the street towards their destination. It was cold, it was late, and Tracy just wanted to be in a nice warm room. She frowned at the sidewalk and scuffed at it with her shoe. If she skimped on food a bit she could afford a room for the night, but that would mean looking for more work.
Wrapping her arms around her middle, Tracy thought back on how this had all started. She was tired or running, running from the past, from old friends, from anyone she met. She was tired and all she wanted to do was sit down and see if anyone caught up. But if anyone did catch up, how would they react?
But no, back to how it started, no more thinking about ending it now. It was only four years prior, and it was on a day quite the opposite of the one Tracy was dealing with at the moment.
It was the day she had found out her brothers death hadn’t been an accident, something not entirely human had killed him. She didn’t believe the strange man at first, but it was that disbelief that sent her out to find the truth, and it was the thing that started her running. Over time she had discovered the truth; that things did go bump in the night. But Tracy wasn’t on a revenge mission; she just wanted to know what killed her brother, and why.
Tracy turned her face to the night sky, blinking back the burning sensation of tears. With that reminder fresh in her mind she trudged on. She was running towards a goal, and while it wasn’t always easy, she wasn’t going to give up. Sometimes the hardest things to find where the things most worth it. Easy wasn’t really an option anymore.
